In the past, the Writing Center has offered workshops by request for UNC-Chapel Hill instructors, staff working groups, and student organizations. At this time, due to budget and staffing constraints, we are no longer able to offer such workshops. However, several related services are available:
- Classroom Visit: A Writing Center staff member can visit a classroom to give an overview of our services and invite students to visit us. This visit will take about 10 minutes and generally needs to be scheduled between 10 and 40 minutes after the hour so that one of our tutors, whose tutoring sessions start on the hour, has time to walk from our office to your classroom. For example, if your class runs from 10:00 to 10:50, a tutor can visit at a time between 10:10 and 10:40. This will allow the tutor to complete his/her previous appointment, visit your class, and be back at the Writing Center in time for his/her next appointment.
- Writing Center Tour: You can arrange a time to bring your students by the Writing Center’s main office in SASB North for a quick tour. A staff member will show the students our space and some of our resources and explain how to make appointments, as well as answer students’ questions.
- Event Participation: You can request that a Writing Center staff member represent us at a large campus event, such as Family Weekend, the RA Fair, the Graduate School Orientation, or the Week of Welcome. One or two of our staff members will be present at the event to greet students and families, describe our services, and answer questions.
- Instructor Consultation: The Writing Center director, assistant director, and ESL specialists often consult with instructors about writing-related concerns such as designing clear and effective writing assignments, responding to student writing, conducting draft workshops, and strategies for working with students whose first language is not English. We’d be happy to spend time helping you with these or other writing-related concerns.
