Carol Winkelman

I teach lively one-on-one coaching sessions that offer writing and self-editing strategies to undergrads, graduate students, post-docs, ESL writers at all levels and junior faculty. I believe writing is a craft that most people can learn with practice–and that writing is both demanding and fun. I focus on the “Story” that my clients wish to communicate–since most writing is about “Story” and “Argument” and not merely grammar and punctuation. I specialize in coaching scientists and research physicians through the challenging process of writing journal articles, NIH grants, IRB protocols and white papers that clearly “tell a story.” For 7 years, I have conducted coaching sessions and workshops for both native and ESL speakers of English at research centers such as NIH, Harvard, Sloan Kettering, UNC, Duke and the University of Pennsylvania. I have coached researchers through the process of writing grants that won NIH funding and articles published in a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals. I also have worked with grad students on dissertations. As Assistant Course Director of Argumentation and Research at UC Irvine, I taught students how to write clear and persuasive essays and proposals. My clients have been pleased with my coaching and mentoring on a wide variety of genres– from career development grants and college applications to literary essays and magazine feature stories. My background includes premed sciences at UCLA, an MA and completed coursework for the PhD in English at UC Irvine, ten years of experience teaching college English, seven years of experience teaching scientific/medical writing and ten years of experience as a investigative journalist and author.
