Qualifications

My training is in history, and like most historians, I have learned to borrow from many different fields, including economics and statistics, and to write about technical subjects both accurately and in a way the general reader can understand. I have been helping others write for over 25 years in business and non-profit organizations as well as in academia. I earned my B.A. in Latin American history at Bowdoin, a certificate in Computer Science at NCSU, and a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies at Duke. I was a graduate student in history at UNC-CH until illness forced me to leave and financial circumstances made me put my studies on hold. I make my living as an editor, writer, and project consultant.

Previous Experience/References

  • Nonfiction editor and writing coach: I have helped scholars plan, draft, revise, polish, submit, and market books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, conference papers, grant proposals, Master’s theses, and dissertations.
  • Editor for collaborative writing projects: I have guided multi-author writing projects from start (or stuck) to finish. I correspond with contributors, sponsors, and publishers; meet deadlines; cross-check facts; harmonize styles to craft coherent narratives that preserve distinct voices and perspectives; find and resolve problems; manage submissions, revisions, edits, and finishing; and coordinate all aspects of production with the publisher.
  • Project manager and consultant: I have coached writers and researchers on project management, that is, to clarify goals; assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and obstacles; determine costs and requirements; budget; schedule; collaborate with stakeholders and experts; and adapt plans to changing circumstances. (I have led projects for businesses, government agencies, and non-profits.)
  • Is English a second language? I often collaborate with foreign scholars. I have helped authors from China, Estonia, Ethiopia, Hungary, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Tibet, Venezuela, and the Ukraine publish in English. (Se habla español. Ich spreche Deutsch.)

Qualifications

I hold an MA in Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). I took a practicum to qualify to work at CMU’s Global Communication Center, where I learned to improve writers rather than fix their writing.

There are four parts to my sessions. Before we meet, I request that you send me your work–no matter what stage it’s in–so I can review it. Then we begin the actual session by establishing shared goals for what to accomplish, but I challenge you to work on the parts of your work that are holding your writing back the most. The third part is the actual tutoring, when I provide fundamental principles you can learn to help your writing in the future. We will likely spend a portion of the time practicing a writing concept and then apply it to your paper toward the end. Finally, at the end of the session, we recap our work and I send you away with a work plan so you remember those principles and how you need to apply them. So with me, you get preparation and a report.

My training allows me to support writers from a variety of angles. Most importantly, the rhetoric component lets me help readers consider the needs of their audience and why they’re even writing. Then, the technical writing component lets me help writers think about how readers see their work and write precisely. Finally, the design component lets me help writers format work so that readers comprehend it visually.

Jennifer E. Sykes

Work Preferred

I prefer to work with students who are struggling to write papers for the social sciences or hard sciences, whether they are native English speakers or not.

Qualifications

I have previously worked as a copy editor at a newspaper, worked on grant-writing for myself and other companies. My dissertation research involves natural language processing, or programming computers to make sense of the content and context of the written word. This specific line of research has re-introduced me to rhetoric and linguistics work, which has helped me improve my writing and editing other’s writing.

Previous Experience/References

I have training in copy editing, rhetoric, and am self-taught with linguistics. I have previously worked as a copy editor at a newspaper. I routinely check other people’s writing, both in an academic context and for professional opportunities. I have written training materials for people at a multi-national corporation so I am aware of the constraints of writing clearly and effectively for diverse audiences. In my corporate and academic lives I have studied a number of different subjects so I am familiar with the basic substance of a large number of subjects.

Fee Range

For editing and critiquing of papers I ask for $20 an hour for review. This averages to about one hour to review a 5 page paper and add in grammatical corrections and explanations as to why the grammar needs fixing. It also covers corrections on unclear language and providing educational examples for how to improve future writing.

Last Minute Requests?

I can accept requests 24 hours in advance for 3-page (or less) paper reviews, but anything longer than that requires 72 hours notice.

Qualifications

MFA in Creative Writing, San Francisco State University
20 years in journalism as a reporter and editor
Deep experience in other writing-related fields (see below)

Previous Experience/References

I have a Master in Fine Arts in Creative Writing (fiction) from San Francisco State. I spent twenty years in journalism as both an editor and reporter, writing everything from magazine-style investigative pieces to book reviews. I have worked as the director of communications for an educational nonprofit and as a technical editor for Japanese engineers. I speak French and German, and can help foreign students make their writing in English sound native-quality. I have edited half a dozen books and written one novel. In short, whatever you’re writing—dissertations, papers, fiction or non-fiction—I can help you make it sing. I’m happy to coach one-on-one, or edit via email. I live in Durham. I conduct private memoir writing classes in Chapel Hill, and co-run a writing retreat program in France, Italy and the Outer Banks called Writeaways.
