My training is in history, and like most historians, I have learned to borrow from many different fields, including economics and statistics, and to write about technical subjects both accurately and in a way the general reader can understand. I have been helping others write for over 25 years in business and non-profit organizations as well as in academia. I earned my B.A. in Latin American history at Bowdoin, a certificate in Computer Science at NCSU, and a graduate certificate in Women's Studies at Duke. I correspond with contributors, sponsors, and publishers; meet deadlines; cross-check facts; harmonize styles to craft coherent narratives that preserve distinct voices and perspectives; find and resolve problems; manage submissions, revisions, edits, and finishing; and coordinate all aspects of production with the publisher.
- Project manager and consultant: I have coached writers and researchers on project management, that is, to clarify goals; assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and obstacles; determine costs and requirements; budget; schedule; collaborate with stakeholders and experts; and adapt plans to changing circumstances. (I have led projects for businesses, government agencies, and non-profits.)
- Is English a second language? I often collaborate with foreign scholars. I have helped authors from China, Estonia, Ethiopia, Hungary, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Tibet, Venezuela, and the Ukraine publish in English. (Se habla español. Ich spreche Deutsch.)
